About Project

Ad Magnet is backed by Sequoia Capital, a leading venture capital firm in India whose investments include Applabs, First Source, Cafe Coffee Day, Global Logic, Indiatimes, Travelguru and Shaadi.com. Globally, Sequoia Capital has been an early investor in leading technology and internet companies such as Google, Yahoo, Apple, Oracle, Cisco, Paypal and Youtube.

I worked as UX designer and build company to centralise the management of advertising operations such as sales, campaign management, reconciliation and billing across large networks of owned and affiliated web sites.

Challenge

Merging the functionality of five separate Windows programs as well as an existing web application into a single online application to be used by a variety of user groups including sales, ad campaign managers, and billing. Application also had to be adaptable for use by external companies purchasing the platform.

My Role

My role was to understand the needs of the customers, and redesigning the Details page to make it more efficient for use by different persona types identified by Adserver.
My role was to envision, test and validate stack holder ideas with quick wireframes and detailed low – high Fidelity mockups .

  • Defined goals and objectives
  • Established key audiences
  • Built personas
  • Conducted Stakeholder interviews
  • Created high-fidelity design & guidelines
  • Created scenarios
  • Created site maps
  • Conducted competitive research
  • Developed low-fidelity prototypes
  • Created wireframes

Design

I follow an iterative design process that involves research and discover, feedback driven design followed by usability testing and comprehensive documentation. Briefly outlining the steps I took:

  • Interview internal stakeholders to identify their needs, and their understanding of the users’ needs.
  • Researched existing design solutions for the problems presented
  • Mock up and prototype new design
  • Prepare usability study to get customer feedback.

Solutions

I worked with the various user groups (e.g., sales, campaign managers, etc.,) to determine their day-to-day tasks with existing Windows applications as well as the existing online application. In addition to this task analysis, I conducted a needs analysis to determine users’ needs and wants in the new application. This analysis helped me establish following goals for wireframes:

  • Layer information is required so users can unfold it as needed
  • Remove extraneous information from screen
  • Improve flow so that a minimum of clicks are required to access information

I created the wireframes for this new online management system, I regularly checked in with users to determine if the new screens allowed for an efficient task flow and provided them with the timely information they needed to make decisions. The project was conducted at a distance over an 14 month period, involving multiple onsite visits as well as WebEx meetings.

Conducting Interviews

Interviews provide me with a qualitative method of gathering evidence, data and information about the project that I’m working on. At the heart of the qualitative research is the desire to expose the human part of a story.

Users Needs

User needs based on interviews with 12 users from a variety of user groups including management, client development associates, traffic associates, network specialists, operations, and account executives. The section details features and functionality requested by users. In addition to the Networks (i.e., A Networks, B networks), Enterprise, remote and Desktop users were represented.

Objectives

Provide a modular home page that internal and external user groups (i.e. Publisher, Support, CDs Traffic, Account Executives, Management, Enterprise networks) can adapt for their own needs. Push pertinent information to users so that they need not dig for it. Provide alerts for:

  • New publisher pending approval
  • Problematic/ missing publisher information (e.g. no contract rate)
  • New campaign issue
  • Queued campaigns to be launched
  • High-level information on technical issues.
  • Campaigns that have gone live.

After figuring out who the projects audience is I normally build the personas, This is similar to shaping a piece of clay. By doing this I’m creating a clear image of who the user in our audience.

Wireframes

I created the wireframes for this new online management system, I regularly checked in with users to determine if the new screens allowed for an efficient task flow and provided them with the timely information they needed to make decisions. The project was conducted at a distance over an 18 month period, involving multiple onsite visits as well as Web-Ex team meetings.
